pHYBi at the European Mission Soil Week 2024

In December 2024, the EU Mission Soil Week took place in Brussels, highlighting the crucial role of soil in mitigating climate change and supporting biodiversity. Key discussions revolved around food security, ecosystem resilience and sustainable soil management. The pHYBi project, which focuses on phytomanagement for a bio-based textile industry, participated in the discussion and was represented by two of its project partners: Idener and the University of Burgos (UBU).

About the European Mission Soil Week

Over two days, soil experts, policy makers and stakeholders gathered to exchange ideas and drive innovation in sustainable soil management. The event advanced the EU mission “A Soil Deal for Europe” (2021) by launching the first 25 Mission Soil Living Labs across Europe. These living labs serve as testing grounds for innovative soil management strategies to improve soil health. They will also put into practice new monitoring frameworks to minimise pollution risks to human health and the environment.

Mission Soil aims to develop concrete steps towards EU soil protection and innovative approaches to regenerative land use, while providing a network for soil protection initiatives. Its main objective is to ensure that at least 75% of European soils are healthy by 2030. To achieve this, the Mission plans to establish 100 living labs and lighthouses across Europe to foster innovation and collaboration. The additional focus on collaboration, innovation and policy integration will help to spread innovation to all relevant stakeholders and reduce the EU’s global soil footprint.

pHYBi’s contribution:

During the European Soil Week, Andrea Martos (Idener), coordinator of the pHYBi project, had the opportunity to present the innovative approaches of the project. She gave an overview of pHYBi’s objectives in areas such as nanophytomanagement, monitoring tools such as genome-scale metabolic models, and feedstock valorisation processes using organosolv techniques. The event also provided a good networking opportunity to connect with related projects and initiatives and to foster future collaborations.
