During the meeting, the projects had the opportunity to present their distinctive approaches and outcomes, ranging from novel materials and biological solutions to remediation strategies aimed at restoring Europe’s soils and waters.
Project overviews
LIFE PFASTER – PFAS systemic regional approach to Assess Spatial distribution, Transfer, Exposure and Remediation of wide-spread pollution in Willebroek, Flanders
LIFE PFASTER aims to improve soil and water quality by developing a regional systemic remediation approach to reduce diffuse pollution with PFAS in soils, sediments, water, and biota. The project integrates innovative and cost-efficient methods to assess spatial distribution, identify exposure routes, and design a replicable remediation approach beneficial for biodiversity and human health.

ARAGORN – The ARAGORN project provides a framework to identify remediation options, reduce risks, and restore the health of soils and ecosystems. ARAGORN builds on existing experiences and introduces mapping, sampling, and monitoring tools. The project tests remediation technologies and restoration practices tailored to each site and contaminant, considering local financial, spatial, and cultural constraints.

bioSOILUTIONS – bioSOILUTIONS addresses soil degradation by optimizing four different biowaste valorisation routes (blood hydrolysate, frass, N-struvite, K-struvite) to create advanced soil improvers. These solutions enhance nutrient recovery from biowaste (e.g., N, P, K, organic matter), reducing landfilling and incineration while producing safe and effective soil amendments.

The discussions during the exchange meeting sparked curiosity, mutual learning, and a shared commitment to continue collaborating.
Healthy soils are the foundation of ecosystems, food systems, and climate resilience, yet they remain one of Europe’s most endangered resources. By collaborating and sharing knowledge across projects, initiatives like pHYBi, LIFE PFASTER, ARAGORN, and bioSOILUTIONS can increase their impact, accelerate innovation, and make real progress towards restoring soil health across Europe.
